MPC and DNEG keep pre-production visualization in-house

MPC and DNEG's own service pages describe in-house previs, concept art and virtual production, unlike the dedicated previs studios profiled elsewhere.

The picture

Two of the industry's largest final-VFX houses describe their pre-production visualization work differently from the dedicated previs studios profiled elsewhere in this guide. On 16 June 2026, a press release confirmed that MPC and The Mill, both owned by TransPerfect, united under a single 'The Mill' brand spanning 'Brand & Content and Film & Series' work. The merged brand's own film and series service page places visualization inside a 'Creative & Design' offering that runs 'from previs and concept art to character and asset development, building visual proposals and entire worlds that guide the creative direction well before, and alongside, the shoot.' DNEG's own site, retrieved 16 September 2026, lists Virtual Production among its named VFX service categories and describes its separate Concept Design department as able to work 'as a standalone atelier or as part of DNEG's wider visual effects offering.'

What the documents show

MPC's merged successor names previs explicitly as part of its Creative & Design work, in the same sentence as concept art and asset development, supporting a genuinely integrated capability rather than a separately branded division. DNEG's language is less explicit: its VFX page names Virtual Production but not previs by that word, and its Concept Design page describes a department able to stand alone commercially, a different claim from confirming it routinely does pre-production visualization for DNEG's own clients. Neither company publishes service descriptions as granular as the dedicated previs studios' own pages elsewhere here, and neither gives a figure comparing in-house previs volume to dedicated vendors' work.

What it is allowed to decide

An in-house previs or concept-design capability inside a final-VFX pipeline plausibly supports the same range of classes a dedicated previs studio's work does, from class 1 alignment through class 5 technical execution, depending on the deliverable; the sources describe organisational structure, not any single artifact, so no more specific class can be assigned. The sources establish Provenance for where this capability sits corporately, named departments, a dated 2026 ownership change, but not Auditability for any specific deliverable these divisions produce, since neither page describes how that work is versioned or reproduced.

The disclosure label

In the site's format: an in-house visualization capability inside two final-VFX groups, one, MPC under The Mill, naming previs and concept art together, the other, DNEG, naming Virtual Production and a separately capable Concept Design department; no single class applies to an organisational structure; holds Provenance for corporate placement and a dated 2026 ownership change; does not hold Auditability for any in-house previs deliverable; dated 16 September 2026; asserted by each company's own service pages.

  • Does an in-house previs team answer to the same director as the final-VFX team, or to a separate client?
  • When a final-VFX house also builds the previs, who checks the plan against the finished shot?
  • Would either company's in-house previs volume matter next to the dedicated studios profiled elsewhere in this guide?

Keeping previs in-house at a final-VFX house is a different vendor model from the dedicated studios this guide otherwise profiles, and the two companies describe that model with noticeably different levels of detail.
